Conference Theme: Cultivating Curiosity

The 2026 SASTA Annual Conference theme, Cultivating Curiosity, invites educators to explore how we nurture curiosity in science classrooms—from the first question to the final reflection. Curiosity is at the heart of scientific thinking, and this year’s theme highlights the teaching practices, learning environments and real-world connections that help students stay engaged, ask better questions and think deeply about the world around them. We’re seeking presentations that showcase practical strategies, innovative ideas and inspiring approaches across all year levels and school contexts.

Possible presentations could include:

Curiosity in Science Understanding

  • Building Big Ideas Over Time - How to grow student understanding of core science concepts from primary to secondary using models, visual representations and shared language.
  • Making Abstract Ideas Stick - Creative strategies for teaching concepts like energy transfer, forces or particle theory in ways that are accessible and memorable.
  • Linking Science to Students’ Worlds - Connecting content to everyday life, local contexts and student interests to increase relevance and curiosity across all science topics.

Curiosity through Science Inquiry

  • Planning and Managing Meaningful Investigations - Tools and techniques for guiding students to ask questions, design fair tests and analyse results at an age-appropriate level.
  • Embedding Inquiry Across Year Levels - How to build inquiry skills progressively, aligned with the Science Inquiry Skills strand from Foundation to Year 10.
  • Data Skills in the Science Classroom - Teaching students how to collect, interpret and present data using authentic science tasks, from weather patterns to food waste audits.

Science That Connects

  • Connecting Science with Culture and Community - Practical ways to embed First Nations perspectives, local contexts and student identities to make science more meaningful and relevant.
  • Science Through Integrated Primary Units - Practical strategies for teaching science in primary classrooms through cross-curricular units, meeting outcomes across multiple learning areas.
  • Creative Pathways into Science - Using storytelling, the arts or student-led projects to engage learners and build curiosity across disciplines.

Curiosity in Action: Contemporary Science

  • Teaching the Science of Now - Bringing current topics, such as climate science, health, or AI into the classroom in ways that align with curriculum content.
  • Connecting with Scientists and Communities - Using local examples, partnerships and guest speakers to show students how science is applied in real-world contexts.
