Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre offers engaging workshops and events for schools and other education centres across Australia, enabling participants to explore and investigate science, technology, and innovation through hands on activities.
Questacon’s interactive sessions will have them thinking, trying, and refining new ideas, expanding their lateral and logical thinking.
Teacher resources have been developed to complement all Questacon virtual excursions.
Under the Sea: Coral Reefs
Pack your swimmers and slip slop slap because we’re heading out to the reef! Take a deep dive into what makes a reef a reef and get to know some of the animals and people that live and work in them.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
Participants will get to share some of their favourite reef creatures and make a coral polyp to add to their class’s ‘reef’. They’ll learn about some of the conditions corals need to survive, and what happens when those conditions change, as well as do some engineering by testing different materials and how they might be used to build tools for scientists to use. We’ll guide participants through some experiments using some simple materials, while collecting their hypotheses and ideas through interactive polls and Q&A functions.
Teachers will receive a resource guide that outlines the key concepts covered in the webinar, as well as some simple classroom activities which can be completed either live during the webinar or extended at a later date to support existing lesson plans.
Our webinars have live captioning available.
This webinar is tailored for grades 3-6, younger participants may need assistance with the hands on activities.
Foldable Flight
Take to the skies with Questacon as we explore flight in this hands-on webinar!
Let your creativity take flight as you make, try and refine your own paper plane designs.
ACTIVITY OUTLINE:
How can you experiment with different elements of your paper plane to change the way it flies?
In this session, come and investigate the engineering and physics of flight by constructing your own paper planes.
Learn how to design two different types of paper planes, darts and gliders, and how various design features such as wing size shape and angle, can affect stability and drag.
This webinar is tailored for grades 3-6, younger participants may need assistance folding their planes.
