This year, we proudly recognise Jane Hosking, whose unwavering support for teachers and laboratory staff has earned her the 2024 Honour Award. Jane’s achievements are part of SASTA’s ongoing mission to foster excellence in education.
A Commitment to Supporting Science Education
Jane has been a consistent and passionate contributor to SASTA for many years. Her involvement has spanned various roles, most notably through her participation in the Member Services Reference Group (MSRG) and its predecessor, the Professional Development Reference Group (PDRG). Jane’s deep commitment to the professional development of science educators has been evident through her thoughtful contributions and her active engagement in planning and organising professional development opportunities.
Bridging the Gap Between Educators and Laboratory Staff
A unique strength of Jane’s contributions is her ability to connect science teachers with laboratory personnel—a vital aspect of successful science education. As a Laboratory Manager at St Francis De Sales College and a leader within the Laboratory Managers Association of SA (LMASA), she has been a crucial liaison between the MSRG, PDRG, and the broader laboratory management community. Jane’s role has not only facilitated professional networking and support but has also enriched science education by ensuring that teachers have the technical backing they need for effective classroom delivery.
A Champion of Professional Development and Early Career Support
Jane’s contributions to professional development are particularly noteworthy. She has played a key role in enhancing SASTA’s offerings by sharing her extensive laboratory experience. Her involvement in developing training programs has provided science educators with access to hands-on, practical insights that have improved teaching and learning outcomes. Jane has also been a strong advocate for early career teachers, actively supporting them through her contributions at the Early Career Teachers Conference. Her leadership within the Eastern and Hills Region’s LMASA Hub Group is a testament to her dedication to fostering a collaborative and supportive community for laboratory professionals.
Dedicated Service to the Science Education Community
In addition to her work with SASTA’s reference groups, Jane has volunteered for many years at the Oliphant Science Awards exhibition, supporting young scientists and celebrating their achievements. Her long-standing commitment to SASTA and the broader science education community is a clear demonstration of her passion for inspiring the next generation of science learners.
