Engaging Communities in Biodiversity Monitoring
The Great Southern BioBlitz (GSB) is an international event dedicated to intense biological surveying, aiming to record all living species within local government areas across the Southern Hemisphere in spring. Using the free and accessible iNaturalist platform, this initiative helps build biodiversity awareness and creates a community-driven inventory of local flora and fauna.
Event Details
Dates: Friday 24 October – Monday 27 October 2025
Location: Based on local government, state, or country boundaries (participants define their own observation range).
Why Get Involved?
- Engage students and the community in biodiversity monitoring.
- Learn about local plant and animal species through hands-on exploration.
- Contribute to a global citizen science project and support conservation efforts.
How It Works
Participants strive to find and photograph as many species as possible within the event timeframe. The collected data is uploaded to iNaturalist, where experts and community members help identify species and expand knowledge about local biodiversity.
Who Is Involved?
The Great Southern BioBlitz has been embraced by organisations such as:
- The Botanical Society of South Africa (BotSocSA)
- The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)
- Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW)
South Australian science teachers and students are encouraged to join the event and use it as an opportunity to enhance STEM learning through real-world scientific inquiry.
How to Participate
Local governments, schools, and community groups interested in participating must nominate a representative and complete the online form:
